AFTER SCHOOL CLUB DESCRIPTIONS 2009-2010 School Year Clubs are offered on regular school days only: no club meetings on vacation days. Credit is available for all clubs to high school students who attend regularly. Please complete After School Club Selection and Fees Form to register your child. Return form and check by Monday, August 24th for first term payments. Payments may be per term or per year. Students may join any term during the year and pay before the start of the new term. Club Offerings: Animation Club Grades 5-12: min 8, max 15 Wednesdays, 3:00- 4:15 pm 7 sessions: $70 Sept 23, Oct 7, Oct 21, Nov 18, Nov 25, Dec 2, Dec 16 This club will focus entirely on animated filmmaking. Celtic Music Club 5-12: min 6, max 12 Mondays, 3:00-4:30 pm Term I (7 sessions): $35 Term II: In this club, students learn to play Celtic music (traditional Irish and New England music) on their own instruments brought from home. All levels of proficiency are invited – from beginners to experts. Pianists should bring keyboards if possible. Questions? Contact Kathy at (425) 432-1445 or at kfrugebrown@yahoo.com Hillside Cavaliers Fencing Club Grades 5-12: min 8, max 22 Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:00-5:00 pm $200 per term Term I (26 sessions): Sept 8 – Dec 17 (except 10/8 and 11/26) Term II (26 sessions): Feb 2 – May 20 (except 2/16, 3/25, 3/30, 4/1, 5/11, 5/13) Individual lessons outside club hours cost an additional $10/30 min. Tournament dates to be decided. Waivers and USFA enrollment forms will be given to interested students at school. These forms and the USFA membership fee ($60) must be returned to Kael on Tuesday Sept. 8th (the first day of fencing). Non-Hillside students may also apply. Term III TBA Wednesdays late April-May according to interest Discover how newspapers and magazines work and learn how to write for them. Practice interviewing techniques, presenting information, and understanding all that goes on behind the headlines. Help develop and run a newspaper for the Hillside Student Community. Special sessions offered on photography, media law, public relations (including writing press releases), editorials (including cartooning) online journalism, and other new media topics of club members’ interest. The advisor will be Elizabeth Ringwald, who has been the Editor of the El Segundo Herald newspaper, the Special Projects Editor for HOME magazine, as well as a content producer for the Microsoft Network. Winter/Spring Term: TBA (Feb 12, Feb 26, March 12, April 16, May 7, May 21, May 28, June 4, June 11) Swing is a great way to learn the basics of social dance. Dance to all styles of music from the big band sounds of the 30’s and 40’s to the contemporary swing artists. No partner and no experience required. Dress comfortably. No special shoes required. 11 sessions: $110
Develop and hone writing skills creating plays, poetry, and short fiction. Homework Club Grades 5-12: min 1, no max
Cost: $10.00 per session Homework Club will be run on a drop-in basis. Students will sign in at the beginning of each session and parents will be billed at the end of each month for the number of sessions their student has attended. Homework Club will provide both monitored study time for students, and a later pickup time for parents. Help with math assignments will be available as needed.
